TRC has been successfully providing career counseling andjob training services to unemployed and underemployed workers since the early 1970's when we were part of Cumberland County government. In 1986, reflecting our desire to better serve our customers, TRC was incorporated as nonprofit agency and began to expand the types of services we offer. In 1994, TRC started providing services statewide with the introduction of the Veterans Workforce Investment Program. Our Veteran services expanded in 1999, when we began helping Homeless Veterans. In 2003, TRC added Americorps programs to its portfolio of employment and training services. In 2006, we expanded our AmeriCorps programs to New Hampshire and Vermont. Today, we manage a $3.6 million annual budget with a staff of thirty-two from our headquarters in Portland, and from satellite offices in Lewiston, Bangor, Dover-Foxcroft and Farmington. Starting with our signature program - co-operator of the Portland CareerCenter - TRC programs are designed to help a wide range of job seekers including Veterans, homeless Veterans, and eligible adults, dislocated workers and youth through the Workforce Investment Act. TRC offers customized business services to area employers to help them with their staffing, recruiting, and training needs. Our customers are diverse and reflect the employment trends of the state. We work with older workers and volunteers in our two statewide AmeriCorps projects. The agency currently administers six National Emergency Grants for workers affected by major plant closures and for fishermen in the declining fishing industry. We also represent large and small businesses with employee recruitment, skills assessments, job development, retention support, and assistance with downsizings. During the most recent program year, which ended on June 30, 2006, TRC programs enrolled over 2,000 individuals in training programs and invested over $883,000 in those workers through tution reimbursements, wage subsidies, and employer training supports. These customers received comprehensive employment services including tuition assistance for training, job search assistance, and career development support. At the Portland CareerCenter, which we jointly operate with the Maine Department of Labor, we had over 31,000 visits and provided 7,491 individuals with job search assistance.
