Description of Killeen Independent School District
The Killeen Independent School District (KISD) has grown from an enrollment of 20,413 students in 1986-1987 to a projected enrollment of 34,430 for 2005-2006. The largest school district between Austin and Dallas, KISD employs over 5,500 teachers and support personnel to serve the district's 50 campuses. KISD serves as the area's second largest employer, second only to Fort Hood. Students from Killeen, Harker Heights, Fort Hood, Nolanville and rural West Bell County attend classes at twenty-nine elementary schools (PK-5), eleven middle schools (6-8), four high schools (9-12), and six specialized campuses. Besides the 50 regular schools and several specialized campuses, the district utilizes portable buildings, which provide approximately 200 potential classrooms. KISD's four high schools, Killeen, Ellison, Harker Heights and Shoemaker, provide multi-level academic instruction on a seven-period schedule and extracurricular activities. The Career and Technology Education Center provides a pre-employment lab as well as trade and industrial courses. Co-operative half-day training programs in the work force complete the career-oriented track.
