Info

CatGen is uniquely designed to enable business networks (BNs) to help their Members create their own on-line B2B & B2C catalogs. The BNs can then aggregate their Members' catalogs into branded e-Marketplaces able to generate the visibility and credibility that is necessary for e-commerce but impossible for the Members to achieve on their own. CatGen is an initiative of PEOPLink, a Maryland based development organization helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) all over the world successfully participate in e-commerce. It has received support from the World Bank's infoDev Program, Swiss Secretariat for Economic Cooperation, USAID, InterAmerican Development Bank, Oracle, and Jeff Skoll, as well as the Rockefeller, Kellogg, Public Welfare, MacArthur, InterAmerican, Paul Allen, Eurasia, and eBay Foundations among others. Its pioneering work has been amply covered in the press (articles from the Washington Post, New York Times, CNN, NewsWeek's Cyberscope, Le Monde, and more). CatGen was developed by a team of talented programmers working from Albania, Siberia, India, Ecuador, Ireland, and Nepal starting in 1999. It has been implemented by more than 1400 users in 44 countries (see selected examples). CatGen won the 2004 Global IT Excellence Award for Digital Opportunity from the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (www.witsa.org). It was also selected as the entry from the U.S. for the World Summit on the Information Society (www.wsis.org). The United Nations Development Programme recently documented its role in generating 4000 jobs in Nepal for women artisans and "young, relatively inexperience IT professionals" in Nepal (http://sdnhq.undp.org/e-comm).
