Info

Dick's Auto Sales, Inc. is a family auto sales/repair business located on Route 52 in Jeffersonville. Established in 1963, today it offers a complete range of auto repair services, NYS vehicle inspections and a wide inventory of clean, late-model used cars and trucks. Its owner, however, has been around the block several times, and his rich experience and knowledge have garnered him a stellar reputation in western Sullivan County, which has always been his home. Richard "Dick" Herbert was born in the old hospital in Callicoon and raised in Fremont Center. He went to grade school for six years at a one-room schoolhouse in Fremont Center. "Then I managed to make two more in Delaware [Valley Central School]," said Herbert with the quiet grin of a guy who found success without much in the way of a formal education. After leaving the books, he worked a series of jobs including construction in local townships, helping build the NYC water tunnel at the Cannonsville Reservoir in Delaware County and working on the NYS Thruway. "I worked for a couple of garages in Liberty and Livingston Manor, and then I went into business for myself," added Herbert. At first, Herbert set up shop at the Shell station across from the bank on Maple Avenue in Jeffersonville. In 1968, he moved the business over to the Shell station on Schoolhouse Road, and in 1972 he relocated to the present location on Route 52 in a Jeff suburb called Kohlertown. Dick Herbert is a familiar sight in town as he tools around in his white 1957 T-Bird or '60 Corvette convertible. Asked what he likes most about the business, Herbert replied, "The variety, I guess. Some days you tow, some days you buy and some days you sell." Thirty-eight years after founding the business, Herbert is "retired," and his son; Joe runs the shop while his dad takes care " of buying and selling the used vehicles. Joe Herbert graduated from Jeff- ", -Youngsville Central School in 1992 and, after studying automotive technology in college for a couple of years, returned to the family business. "That's what I knew all my life," said Herbert of his decision to make a career in the automotive profession. Reflecting on working in the garage as a youngster pushing a broom, he said, "You start from the bottom and go to the top - from sweeping the floor to being a partner. Dick's Auto Sales offers a complete list of auto service: brakes, shocks, tune-ups general repairs and engine diagnosis. "We have plenty of tow trucks and flatbeds," said Herbert of their fleet of five tow vehicles. Asked to define their 23 1/2 hours of tow service and which half-hour wasn't on there clock, father and son teamed up to privd a country answer. "Some day you may call and find out!" What does Joe Herbert like about the business? "Dea1ing with a lot of different people everyday - you meet a lot of different personalities." Kathy Herbert, Dick's wife, and her daughter Jacki do most of the bookwork, while Joe's brother-in-law works as a mechanic,. Jacki's husband helps out on a part-time basis while she keeps the website up and running.
