Southern Insulation, Inc. was founded in 1971 as an independent insulation contractor. Lewis Strieter, the founding president brought with him over twenty-five years of insulation contracting experience. Lewis Strieter's experience served as the foundation for the solid growth of Southern Insulation. After starting out in the insulation business, the firm entered into the asbestos abatement field in 1979. Since then, Southern has removed millions of square feet of asbestos containing materials. Most of our work has been performed in occupied government buildings in the Washington D.C. area. Southern Insulation has also worked in many historically significant buildings, including the Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art, the Greyhound Bus Station, the Smithsonian Institution's American and Natural History Museums, the National Portrait Gallery and the Freer Gallery of Arts. Over the years, Southern has also been the prime contractor for the removal of asbestos containing materials from the Kennedy Center and World Bank. Southern has always been at the cutting edge of the abatement industry. We bought the first Vec-Loader vacuum transport system in the Baltimore-Washington area. The system was used on our first multi-million dollar abatement project at 2000 L St., an office building full of law firms. In addition to buying the most dynamic equipment on the market, Southern has also helped develop new equipment for the abatement industry. In 1986, President Jerry Strieter invented and patented the Portable Isolation Enclosure. The MT-3 P.I.E. is a unique negative pressure enclosure that combines traditional containment with state-of-the-art technology to produce an entirely new method for hazardous particulate control. The MT-3 P.I.E. has since been used to safely remove over three million square feet of ceiling materials from occupied spaces, without the need for conventional "full containment." Southern has used the MT-3 for many processes, including sprinkler projects, asbestos abatement, cable pulls, and HVAC retrofits. The MT-3 has revolutionized environmental and industrial operations, and has become a mainstay for Southern Insulation.
