Description of Animal Care Center

Animal Care Center is a full service veterinary hospital. We offer a wide range of services, including dentistry, allergy testing, spaying and neutering, vaccinations, heartworm treatment, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, and much more. ACC is equipped to do in-house diagnostics via our VetTest 8008 chemistry analyzer, ECG/Pulse oximeter, 400mA Summit radiograph unit, and we also utilize Antech Diagnostics, an outside full service veterinary testing laboratory. Dr. Brent N. Melloy has been the hospital director since 1990. His medical interests include orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, dermatology, allergies, infectious diseases, emergency and critical care, and a whole host of other areas of veterinary medicine and surgery. At ACC we strive to make any and everything available to our clientele. Such things as allergen hyposensitization, which is relatively new and not so common in this profession, is being done regularly in our practice. We treat and maintain patients in renal failure, diabetics, patients with thyroid problems, patients with congestive heart failure, and so on. We design feeding programs for animals with weight problems. Our philosophy is this: every person who walks through our door has a need, and, while we may not have the specific answer or solution, we will know who can help. There is always something we can do, even if it means sending the client to the proper place to get the help they need. Vaccinations: An article recently appeared in the Houston Chronicle stating that annual vaccinations are unnecessary in dogs and cats. While there is probably some validity to this story, the truth is that no actual determination has been made by vaccine producers concerning the duration of immunity produced by their particular vaccines. The state of Texas requires by law that dogs and cats be vaccinated with the 3-year rabies vaccine EVERY YEAR. Above and beyond that, there is no other state-regulated vaccination requirement. Groomers and kennels generally require full yearly vaccination of both dogs and cats. This, of course, is to protect them from pets spreading diseases to one another and also has legal implications. Our viewpoint is, we probably should not be vaccinating dogs and cats every year with every vaccine, with the exception of rabies vaccine. We have stopped administering the 6-month interim parvovirus vaccine in dogs. We do not make Giardia or Lyme's disease vaccine a part of our standard canine annual. More to come on this later. We have discontinued using the Feline Infectious Peritonitis virus intranasal vaccine due to conflicting reports on it's safety and efficacy. Zoonotic diseases these are the diseases that people and pets share.
