Since its beginning, Ask Design has been growing and changing to meet the needs of customers. In 1998, the business consolidated from being five smaller branch locations to one main location on North Union Street in downtown, Olean, NY. As the store was being readied for opening, my wife, Therese, and I stood in the space and asked each other, "How in the world are we going to fill all of these showcases with inventory?" Two years later, we found ourselves saying, "We need more room!" In 2002, Ask Design Jewelers made the short move across the street to 175 North Union Street, a location four times the size of our former "larger" store. Now Olean is home to one of the largest independently owned jewelry stores in the Northeast. It had long been a dream of ours to build a jewelry store that would become a destination. When we started speaking to financial and industry analysts, they told us we were crazy to build such a large store in a small city. Somehow, we knew those analysts never could understand that the people of Olean, and the surrounding area, would appreciate and support a downtown store with a large selection of inventory. Having a place to do jewelry and gift shopping without having to travel out of the area to find what you want... we know that is important! With more space, we were able to expand selection in all departments; especially diamonds!
