Info

North State makes several recommendations regarding computer security. 1. Each and every computer connected to the Internet should run an up to date version of virus protection software. Computer viruses, worms and trojans are rampant on the Internet today and users should take every precaution in avoiding them. North State scans each incoming email for viruses before it reaches your inbox. However, this is not a perfect solution and sometimes new viruses come out before there is a solution to it. Also, viruses today can be generated in a variety of different ways. 2. Hackers and "phishers" may try and access your personal information through your computer. North State recommends using a firewall program to stop these malcontents from doing harm. Many virus protection programs include firewall software today. Also, the latest Service Pack for Windows XP includes a firewall. 3. Spyware or Adware is software that is installed on your computer without your knowledge. It's purpose is typically to gather information about your usage patterns but can also generate a large number of unwanted popup advertisements on your computer screen. Spyware is a major cause of computer problems today but can be managed through use of several software programs. North State does not endorse any particular software programs in combating these issues. However, many of our users have experienced success using the programs listed on our download pages.
