BMG Metals, Inc. (formerly Beauchamp, Martin, Gay &Co.) is a Richmond, Virginia-based steel service center with branches in Chesapeake VA, Lynchburg VA, Manassas VA and Wilson NC. The company was founded in 1963 by three ex-Hill Chase Steel Co. & Ryerson employees who felt that the Richmond area needed a local metals supplier that focused on the customer's needs. In the beginning, the company leased a few hundred square feet of office space in a shopping center, and brokered metals of all kinds from stainless wire mesh to alloy steel bars. With no inventory and no trucks, the company survived by shipping mill and depot direct to customers who had trouble finding certain items and who were not being served well by out of town service center chains. Wally Beauchamp, Cliff Martin, and King Gay were the only employees for several years as the company grew very slowly. As time went on, the company developed a loyal following who began looking for a local company to stock their steel and aluminum products. And as Beauchamp, Martin and Gay realized that they would have to stock metals in order to grow, the company began the process that would eventually lead to a large steel storage facility with over $4 million dollars in inventory during the mid-late 70's. BMG has grown from a small mom-and-pop operation into a modern metals superstore by providing customers with uncompromising service coupled with the most diverse inventory of metals in the mid-Atlantic region. It has grown from the original three founders to 3 brothers running 6 locations, over 60 trucks, a reinforcing bar fabricating division, a specialties steel division and over 200 employees. Currently owned and operated by three brothers; Bery, Bill and Tom Gay (sons of the founder) the company has prospered by using hands-on management that enable it to provide quick responses and the flexibility expected from a locally owned business. While adhering to the same customer-oriented principles established by the founders, the brothers have brought the company into the modern era of steel distribution by building modern facilities, state of the art equipment, hiring metals professionals, and using innovations to sell, process, and market its products. BMG Metals supplies carbon steel, aluminum and stainless steel to a diverse range of customers including machine shops, steel fabricators, precasters, utilities, industrial plants, sheet metal shops and the construction industry.
