Americal Corporation was founded in 1968 by Robert J. Froeber, Sr. when he saw an emerging opportunity in the new pantyhose market for Food, Drug & Mass Merchandise stores. To address this trend, Americal built modern, high-speed manufacturing facilities designed specifically to produce pantyhose and within 10 years became the third largest producer of women's hosiery in the United States. In 1989, Bob Froeber, Jr. became Chairman/CEO and led Americal towards a new challenge , aggressively entering the sock category using the Peds® brand name, which Americal had acquired in 1969. The Peds® sock line was introduced in 1996 and grew to be the top national brand of women's socks available in Mass Merchandise stores. In 2003 Americal saw the need to become both more focused and more flexible to succeed in today's ever-changing business climate.
