General Spring was established in 1963 in Hyannis, Mass., by Alexander Lavine and Joseph Collins. Operating as General Spring and Wire Inc., the company manufactured garage door extension and torsion springs much as it does today. In addition, the company manufactured extension, compression and helical springs for a wide variety of industries. After a series of management changes, General Spring and Wire and most of the workforce relocated to its present location in Hartsville, Tenn., to take advantage of the burgeoning automotive market. With few changes, this hard-working group of dedicated employees continues to operate today as General Spring LLC. The geographic location, as well as the incredibly dedicated workforce were the main drivers behind our desire to own the company. The company has many of the same employees who were with the company when it was relocated to Tennessee which speaks volumes to their loyalty and dedication as well as their skill in manufacturing springs. We have over 300 years of spring manufacturing experience in house. We were very impressed with the employees, and being located in the Southeast put us right in the middle of one of the fastest growing regional economies in the country. Tennessee is also a national hub for interstate traffic. We are within a day's drive of more than 60 percent of the U.S. population. That helps us meet the demands of our customers, provide consistently superior customer service, and keep shipping costs to a minimum.
