James Madison University (JMU) will use the Anti-Tobacco Media Blitz program to serve 12 - 18 year olds in Harrisonburg City, and Rockingham County. JMU will collaborate with three other lead organizations in the Harrisonburg - Rockingham community to administer these programs. The Anti-Tobacco Media Blitz is designed as a social marketing campaign for high school campuses where young people will work closely with media professionals to learn to write and produce effective messages. JMU received a $147,553.00 grant from the VTSF. "I am very pleased that the VTSF is able to fund these organizations to implement youth tobacco use prevention programs in their communities," said Marty Kilgore, VTSF executive director, "We appreciate their commitment to helping us empower the youth of Virginia to choose not to use tobacco products." The VTSF funds 111 community-based organizations throughout Virginia to implement youth tobacco use prevention programs. Since January, program funding has totaled $8.6 million. These programs reach over 375,000 Virginia youth, and are designed to teach youth about tobacco use cessation, life skills, advocacy, youth empowerment, and social skills in an effort to assist them in avoiding tobacco use. The Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation was established in 1999 to lead a statewide effort to reduce and prevent the use of tobacco products by youth in Virginia. The VTSF is meeting its mission through multifaceted efforts including statewide community programs and education, a youth-targeted marketing and advertising campaign, innovative research, and enforcement of Virginia's tobacco access laws. Virginia has committed 10% of its share of the Master Settlement Agreement to fight youth tobacco use.
