The Natural Market was founded by Joan Reardon, a registered nurse, herbalist and educator. As a nurse, she saw a connection between illness and nutritional deficiencies and decided to focus on prevention of disease through whole food nutrition. Her store, originally named The Natural Shop, first opened in the fall of 1979 at 195 Main Street in Groton, Massachusetts. It was a small space of about 700 square feet... but it was enough to hold a wide selection of bulk herbs, teas, whole grain foods, vitamins, nutritional supplements, essential oils, and other products designed to support a healthy lifestyle. Eighteen years later, in March of 1997, the business moved down the street into the building which had been the home of the Groton Post Office. With about 2,000 square feet of space, the new location at 148 Main Street was nearly three times as large as the previous shop, affording room for a greatly expanded selection of whole food groceries, organic produce, supplements, body care, a kitchen and much more. Today, The Natural Market is a mainstay of the community, serving a broad customer base in North Central Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. In addition to groceries, organic produce, nutritional supplements and natural body care, the store offers classes and free lectures on a variety of health topics. Joan's passion to educate and serve is part of what keeps The Natural Market focused and in tune with our customers' needs.
