Bi Water Farm and Greenhouse
Info
In the early spring, we all rush out to get our garden started. Some of us will start the early spring with the cole crops such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower etc. The we proceed right into the tomatoes, peppers, squashes. As spring proceeds, our cole crops here in central Kentucky don't quite perform very well. Our broccoli or cauliflower may bolt and go to seed and we get a little frustrated. But, not to worry. In a few short weeks our summer veggies start producing and we forget about the bad cole crops. Then come mid August, our tomatoes and pepper production is starting to wane and our attention span starts to let us abandon the garden. But this should never happen. For me, the next best season to summer veggie gardening, is the fall garden. This is where we get fabulous broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and more. The reason these crops do so much better in the fall than in the spring is because they are maturing when it is cooler. In the spring, they mature when it is hot. The crops to plant for a fall garden are broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, collards, turnips, different lettuces, mustard and even brussel sprouts. But to get the great fall garden, you must plant it starting the last of July through August. Plant the fall garden in successive weeks over a 3 week span. The broccoli and cauliflower you plant the last of July until August 5, they will mature starting the first week of October. And the last planting about August 20 will mature about the last of October to November 10. But, the mature heads of broccoli, etc, in October, will not go bad for a long time. If you arrange it correctly, and if the weather does not get extremely cold in November and December, you will harvest kale, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage all the way until Christmas. Now, that is why I say the fall garden for veggies, is probably the best of all gardens!
