Info

The Scottish Tartans Museum is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the heritage of Scottish Highland Dress. We welcome you to help us in achieving our mission by becoming either an individual or a corporate sponsor of our museum. How we are funded: While we do receive some project-specific grants that enable us to achieve specific, project oriented goals, for our day to day operational expenses we rely solely on gift shop sales. We rely entirely on funds generated by our gift shop to pay our rent, pay our electric bill, pay for insurance on our many priceless artifacts and exhibits, stock our gift shop, travel to Highland Games, buy office supplies, and pay our two employees a very modest wage. What we do: The Museum is open throughout the year in the Smoky Mountains of western NC. Yes, we even stay open during the winter, when many other museums and tourist attractions in the area close for the season. We are dedicated to providing accurate information about the Highland Dress tradition year round. We only charge two dollars for our museum admission, and children get in for a dollar. What other attraction of our nature has an entrance fee so low? In effect, this nominal admission charge simply provides us with an accurate means of keeping tally on our museum admissions during the year. Many school and church groups are admitted for special tours for free each year. We regularly travel to local schools and libraries where we give Scottish heritage programs at no cost to the institution. We travel to area Highland Games and Scottish Festivals where we provide the service of doing tartan research for games attendees, again with no cost to either the public or the games. We answer a large volume of email, letter, and telephone enquires, ranging from "What's my tartan?" to "What is the proper way my kilt should be pleated for an accurate late eighteenth century military impression?" We believe accurate answers to these questions are an invaluable service that we are proud to offer. There is no charge or research fee for any of this. How you can help: Since we rely solely on gift shop sales to provide the funding for all of the above services, our viability depends largely on the economy. When the economy suffers, our budget becomes thread bare! You can imagine when you can either spend your paycheck on your mortgage or your new kilt, which would you pick? Let's face it, people are traveling less and spending less when they do travel. But we still get just as many research enquiries, invitations to Games, and visitors to the museum. We need your help to keep providing the same excellent service to the Scottish heritage community. Become a Sponsor: One of the things you can do to support the Scottish Tartans Museum is to become a sponsor. We are happy to accept you either as a corporate or individual sponsor, either on a one-time or reoccurring basis. Since we are a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, your donation to us is completely tax deductible.
