WisperTel is a Wireless Internet Service Provider building a carrier class network targeting communities not being served by other broadband access providers along Colorado's Front Range. Previously, only satellite solutions were available to users that need high-speed access to the Internet. WisperTel services are targeted to both commercial and residential users, offering speeds from 256 Kbps to 8 Mbps. Barry Pier, President/CEO of WisperTel noted, "now Small Office Home Office (SOHO) users and persons who need to connect with corporate LANs and Virtual Private Networks will be able to do so." Key to the quality of service that WisperTel provides is the performance of its backbone network. Solectek SkyWay wireless routers operating at 2.4GHz have been delivering "solid" performance says Barry Pier, President/CEO of WisperTel "Snow storms and heavy downpours along with over 100 degree summer days have not affected the performance of our Solectek radios," says Mr. Tomaszewski. All-weather performance was a key criterion in our selection of Solectek radios as radios need to be located on the tops of mountains that are many times not accessible due to heavy winter storms. WisperTel has installed a 21-mile link from the top of Squaw Mountain to a location in Denver that has experienced no problems. "We are very satisfied with the performance of this link" says Eric Tomaszewski, Senior Manager, Network Operations for WisperTel. Having satisfied this first critical variable WisperTel was able to accurately plan a network that would initially service 4 counties including cities and neighborhoods more than 40 miles from Denver. Many locations WisperTel wanted to create cells for were on opposite sides of heavy forests and around mountains, they needed a solution that would not introduce heavy latency if units were connected to one another in a repeater arrangement. WisperTel wireless services business model must be cost-effective and scaleable to serve their customer base. Some of WisperTel criteria in selecting Solectek's SkyWay Series radios were:Outdoor Reliability - Solectek offered outdoor mounted, ruggedized cases suitable for the harsh climate in Colorado. Distance - Offering 200/400mW subscriber radios and 400mW base stations, Solectek powered radios have up to 10 times more power for a cleaner received signal for long distance signal propagation. Capacity - Solectek radios offer 6 non-overlapping channels, twice as many as standard Wi-Fi, 802.11(b). Speed - Solectek products feature enhanced throughput over standard 802.11(b) products and provided constant throughput when stretched over long distances. Security - Solectek's proprietary and patented dynamic polling access protocol is fundamentally different in how packets are encapsulated from the standard 802.11b, they will be misunderstood and appear as indiscriminate noise to off-the shelf equipment. The SkyWay Net Base stations maintain strict access control lists and the SkyMate subscriber unit is designed to listen only to the base station it is associated with. WisperTel was designing a complex network to provide the highest level of service in an area with extreme weather and rugged terrain. They needed equipment that could be installed quickly and easily in many different spaces. SkyWay was more than up to the task with a watertight, aluminum case and temperature tested shell that is roughly the size of a shoebox. Waterproof connectors are not readily found on wireless devices in the unlicensed band, Solectek SkyWay Series routers tout military specification connectors that twist & lock into place even by thickly gloved fingers.
