St. Athanasius offers an extensive athletic program to its students beginning in fourth grade. Fall marks the start of the football season, with all students invited to play and to be a part of the St. A's teams. Seventh and eighth graders play varsity level tackle football and participate in the Council II-3A Athletic League. Sixth graders play tackle football on the junior varsity, and compete in the Catholic school league. Flag football is available for children in the fourth and fifth grades. Games have traditionally been played at Robert Crown, with this league being part of the Evanston Recreation Department. Both eighth grade girls and boys have the option to be cheerleaders for the varsity football team. Fall is also the season for girls' volleyball. Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 each field their own volleyball team, with the seventh and eighth grade girls competing in the Council II-3A Athletic League. Following the fall sports is the basketball season. Play begins in fourth grade with the children competing in the Evanston Recreation Department league. Two or three teams per grade are formed so that all the children who are interested in basketball are given the opportunity to play. Fifth graders also play in the Evanston Recreation Department league, with boys and girls having their own teams. Grades 6, 7 and 8 each fields their own teams of boys and girls, if a class is large two or more squads are organized. These teams compete in the Council II-3A league. Varsity level teams compete in playoff tournaments at the end of their seasons. During the spring our track team practices and competes. This team is open to all athletes in grades 3-8. All the Athletic programs at St. Athanasius teach the fundamentals of the game, along with good sportsmanship. All students are invited to participate. No school tryouts are held. Students are charged a fee to participate, but arrangements can be made to waive fees so that all children may participate. Each team receives the support of the entire school community.
