Wellmark strongly believes that as the largest health-insurer in Iowa, we have a corporate responsibility to help improve the health status of our citizens. This is why we focus on partnerships with some of the best not-for-profit organizations to fund research projects, support special programs and assist with their fundraising efforts to make the largest positive impact on health in our state. In addition, Wellmark supports various physical fitness opportunities, with the understanding that participation in physical activity can have a positive affect on a person's overall health. Wellmark was pleased to be a sponsor in the AAU Junior Olympic Games. During this time 50,000 participants came to Des Moines and competed in different sporting events. This event is the single largest, multi-sport youth competition in the country. The Games began on July 27 and ended on August 7. Wellmark was proud to support the American Diabetes Association, the nation's leading nonprofit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. The mission of the organization is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. To fulfill this mission, the American Diabetes Association funds research, publishes scientific findings, provides information and other services to people with diabetes, their families, health care professionals and the public. The Association is also actively involved in advocacy efforts for scientific research and for the rights of people with diabetes. In 2004, Wellmark was pleased to be the Presenting Sponsor of the America's Walk for Diabetes events throughout Iowa and South Dakota.
