Ed Mehlman & Associates is a national recovery auditing firm established in 1984 and headquartered in Dallas, Texas. We have focused on the large retail department store, full offering retail store, and specialty store environment. No other audit firm that is currently operating can match the experience and capabilities in auditing this industry segment. The retail industry was the first business segment to take advantage of recovery auditing. They understood that their largest category value in assets was inventory. They knew that there were two key basic functions in this retail model that had to be successfully and efficiently managed: buy the right inventory (merchandising and sales), and put in place an operating system and procedures to account for this inventory (accounts payable and inventory control/ POS systems). In 1984, Ed Mehlman recognized a need that was not being met by any contemporary audit firms. He crafted a business plan that would adapt to the ever-changing retail environment: one that would be integral in guiding retail enterprises in system efficiencies. Ed Mehlman began by recruiting successful senior management from the retail sector, creating an audit staff, technology staff, and senior administration that had direct retail-related accounting experience. He then subsidized this group with young accounting professionals who had excellent mathematics and systems skill sets. The plan took shape. Ed Mehlman & Associates started out as a successful but narrow range accounting firm. The first assignments were financial audits to produce year end work papers for 10Q and 10K reporting and bank refinancing arrangements. As demand grew and word of Ed Mehlman & Associates' audit quality spread, the company began taking on systems reengineering assignments, consulting engagements, and various other operational audits. These engagements then grew from basic systems work to full recovery audit analysis, where Ed Mehlman & Associates found itself to be strikingly adept. The approach was to map out the client's accounts payable systems, and thereby determine operational deficiencies and weaknesses in the processing methods (back then this method was called flow chart analysis). Retailers found out about the firm's skills and successes. Business grew by word of mouth, and one account lead to another. Clients are interested in our expertise, skill sets, training methods, and intellectual content. We have been performing recovery audits for retailers for 22 years.
