Info

Burwell Enterprises, Inc., a multi-faceted information management consulting company, was founded in 1984 by company president Helen Burwell. Since that time, BE has served the needs of hundreds of clients from across the world in areas including library automation, electronic information retrieval, online searching, and the evolving career specialty for information professionals that has become known as information brokering. Since 1984, Burwell Enterprises has published The Burwell World Directory of Information Brokers, formerly known as The Directory of Fee-Based Information Services, which now lists nearly 1800 information retrieval services in 46 countries. The Directory, which has been cited as the "best of its type," has become the standard reference for information brokers seeking to subcontract work and by those companies which outsource information research. The BE newsletter, Information Broker, is considered a basic tool for both practicing information brokers (also known as independent information professionals) and for those interested in learning about the profession. In addition, a catalog of other BE publications is available. To better serve the information management needs of its library, corporate, and legal clientele, Burwell Enterprises is a reseller, consulting service, and trainer for Inmagic ® software products. As a full-service information brokerage, the company provides information research services to an international clientele. Burwell Enterprises presents a series of seminars about online information retrieval through the Information Professionals Institute, which Ms. Burwell co-founded in 1993. Topics include subjects such as comparative online database searching, choosing online services, and public records research for business decision-making. Customized sessions are available for those interested in learning how to "search smarter" using information resources in particular fields or subject areas. Audiences have included knowledge workers in corporations, the legal community, professional groups, and organizations such as the United Nations Library, the National Drug Intelligence Center, and Harvard University's Development Office. Helen Burwell holds a Master's Degree from the School of Library and Information Science of Louisiana State University, which named her Outstanding Alumna, 1996. She served as the first president of the Association of Independent Information Professionals and is a member of the American Association of Law Libraries, Special Libraries Association, and the Society for Competitive Intelligence Professionals. Ms. Burwell is an acknowledged expert in the field of information research. A frequent public speaker in the U.S., in recent years she has been an invited guest speaker both at the European Information Brokers Meeting in Frankfurt, Germany and at the first Asian And Pacific Rim Conference and Exhibition on Electronic Commerce in Shanghai, The Peoples Republic of China. Ms. Burwell is General Editor of The Burwell World Directory of Information Brokers and the Information Broker newsletter. She recently served as technical editor of Naked in Cyberspace, by Carole Lane, a 1997 publication of Pemberton Press which looks at public records and online information regarding people.
