Shelter's Diversity Internship Program, founded in 1988, was created to introduce additional diversity into the workforce. By doing so, Shelter has been better able to identify and service the needs of our many policyholders. In addition, the program allows exceptional minority college students to sample the inner workings of a multifaceted corporation. The Diversity Internship Program has seen great success throughout its life. Each year's class is comprised of extraordinary students from a wide range of academic backgrounds: accounting, electrical engineering, economics, business administration, communications, education, and music, to name a few. Shelter hires only the best and brightest students to join the Diversity Internship Program. Admittance to the program is based on test results, field of study and a personal interview. Students must not only be a minority, they must have also reached full-time sophomore standing or above and be available from May to August. As a result of the detailed screening process, a high degree of professionalism and excellence is expected of interns. The program provides opportunities in marketing or claims branches throughout our 14 operating states, or in one of 20 departments at the Home Office. Upon graduation from college, interns may apply for full or part-time positions.
