Chicago (October 31, 2007) - Resurrection Medical Center today announced the availability of a new, minimally-invasive robotic-assisted surgery to treat patients- the da Vinci® Surgical System/da Vinci® SÔ System. Resurrection Medical Center is the only hospital in the Resurrection Health Care System that offers this surgical option. The da Vinci System allows a surgeon's hand movements to be scaled, filtered and translated into precise movements of micro-instruments within the operative site. The System consists of an ergonomically designed surgeon's console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms, the high-performance InSite® 3D HD Vision System and the proprietary EndoWrist® Instruments. These mechanisms provide surgeons with greater panoramic visualization, enhanced dexterity, precision and control and superior ergonomics. Thus, the surgeon is able to perform precise surgery in complex procedures, such as prostatectomies, hysterectomies and mitral valve repair, through small surgical incisions. Numerous clinical studies have shown that patients who have been operated on with the da Vinci System experience shorter hospital stays, less pain, less risk of infection, less blood loss and transfusions, less scarring and faster recovery.
