Founded in 1991, Fermalogic is a research-driven industrial biotechnology company that develops technology to improve pharmaceutical manufacturing. We specialize in pharmaceuticals that are produced by fermentation, which encompasses a large range of products from antibiotics to anticancer agents, immunosuppressants, and many others types of natural products. We also develop technology for co-product recovery. Our first technology in this area applies to recovering isoflavones as a co-product from soy-bean based fermentations such as antibiotic fermentations. Fermalogic uses the erythromycin manufacturing process as a model system. In this area, we have developed a technology referred to as FermachannelingSM, described in the publications that are linked to this site. Fermachanneling encompasses Fermalogic's first line of strain improvement products for commercial manufacturing. We are currently seeking erythromycin manufacturers to beta-test this new technology. Scientists at Fermalogic have been trained specifically in the microbiology, molecular biology, and chemical analysis of actinomycete fermentations. Our Ph.D.'s have had previous experience in the pharmaceutical industry in strain improvement. They also have contract research experience in the area of strain improvement. Fermalogic scientists are practiced in the art of traditional actinomycete strain improvement, but their goal is to seek rational ways to improve the process by making it more reliable, less expensive, less time consuming and less labor-intensive. Facilities and Equipment Fermalogic is located in a state-of-the-art biotechnology research center in the Chicago Technology Park, located in the Illinois Medical District, adjacent to the University of Illinois Medical School campus, just minutes away from downtown Chicago. Fermalogic is equipped to handle fermentations from one milliliter microtiter fermentations, through shake flasks and up to three liter computer controlled stirred jar fermentors. Our fermentation analysis equipment includes HPLC capabilities and Flash Chromatography. In addition we are fully equipped for research and development, in the area of molecular biology of actinomycetes. Research Support Fermalogic's research has been supported through grants from The National Institutes of Health in conjunction with the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. In addition Fermalogic is supported by research contracts from the pharmaceutical industry. The company has been a member of the John Innes Streptomyces Club since 1993. The Streptomyces club provides genetic tools and technical advice covering latest advances in actinomycete research.
