Bournewood Hospital is a full-service, independent psychiatric hospital licensed for 90 beds, which has been in continuous operation as a psychiatric hospital on twelve acres in South Brookline since 1895. It was originally located in Forest Hills, Boston, in 1884. It serves patients of all ages, all ethnic and socio-economic groups, all diagnostic categories, and has contracts with most insurances and managed care companies including Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross, Tufts, and Harvard Pilgrim. Bournewood Hospital has 24-hour, 7-day per week psychiatric physician presence on campus, admits patients 24 hours a day, has five inpatient units, separate acute residential beds, separate adult and child adolescent partial hospital programs, and outpatient services. Adult Partial Hospital and Ambulatory Services are available at the Bournewood Caulfield Center in Woburn, MA. The hospital meets Department of Mental Health and Department of Public Health licensing standards, and is fully accredited, with Gold Seal Approval, by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and is certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). It meets all state and municipal public safety standards, and also has a Federal Methadone detoxification license. In addition to being a clinical resource for Boston University medical students, Boston University psychiatric residents, and Harvard Longwood psychiatric residents, Bournewood is also a training site for the Tufts post-doctoral Ph.D. neuropsychology fellow, and Psy.D. psychology interns from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology. We are a training site for MSW students from Boston University, Boston College, and Simmons College; a training site for RN students from the University of Massachusetts, Massachusetts Bay Community College, and Northeastern University; and activity therapy students from Lesley University. Bournewood Hospital is also the inpatient site for the Commonwealth Research Center of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Mental Health Center.
