Digital Preservation
Info
Digital Preservation, founded in 1999, specializes in providing on site digitization services of historic documents and artwork. We have considerable experience with the digital reformatting of a variety of source materials including large format maps, etchings, watercolors, oils, lithographs, offset publications, glass plate negatives, illuminated manuscripts, sheet music, photographs, architectural renderings, mosaics and, recently, dimensional artifacts. Items have been folded, bound in volumes, encapsulated in mylar and set in concrete! Our service, provided on site for the protection of these historic items, is tailored to suit the needs of our clients and the demands of the material. The type and size of the original dictates the method and handling required, making every project unique! The largest original, captured as a single file, has been a 92"X 63" mounted map, for the Missouri State Archives. The smallest has been 8"X10" 1904 World's Fair glass plate negatives. Due to the fragile nature, age and size of many of these source materials, flatbed, drum and roller scanners may not be appropriate. Digital Preservation, after considerable testing, has selected an in camera, high resolution digital scan back capable of reproducing all the finest detail with the greatest tonal sensitivity and a contrast range capable of being balanced to the original. This combination of equipment eliminates most of the physical stress on the original often incurred with other approaches. The high resolution digital captures, Digital Preservation provides, are as close to preservation quality as current technology allows. Our master files answer a number of questions relating to large format archiving, information preservation, display, publishing, printing and web use. Digital Preservation has worked with various organizations, including the Missouri State Archives, the St. Louis Public Library and the State Historical Society of Missouri. I believe this to be a unique service, which will benefit those who dedicate their lives to preserving our past, for those in the future to see.
