First, please understand that “hospice” is not a death sentence. The sooner hospice comes into a patient’s home the more that can be accomplished. While it is true hospice does not know how someone truly feels when they are dying, hospice staff can relate with empathy to their losses. Loss comes in many ways throughout our lives, including the loss of friendships, loss of a home, loss of a beloved pet, loss of health, loss through divorce and of course, loss through death. Empathy comes from life experience while working through losses, and in the midst of sorrow and loss hospice staff has the compassion for others who walk the same journey.
