Carthage Area Hospital was established as a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) rural community hospital in 1965. This 78-bed acute care facility includes a 30 bed Skilled Nursing Unit and services approximately 30,000 residents living in eastern Jefferson, northern Lewis and southern St. Lawrence Counties. The hospital has a 10 bed Acute Rehabilitation Unit and is the only hospital in New York to receive a three-year accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Last year, the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organization (JCAHO) surveyed the hospital, Skilled Nursing Facility and laboratory resulting in an average score of 96%. These accreditations attest to the quality of care being offered by physicians and technical staff. The hospital has enhanced healthcare services and is proud to be operating five quality driven "Center of Excellence," including: Nutrition Services, Rehabilitative Services, Urological Services, Cardiology Services (including a full service Cardiac Rehab Center) and Women's Health Services with modern birthing beds and 24-hour epidural anesthesiology. Carthage Area Hospital is the only hospital in the tri-county region that is licensed for the New York State Department of Health Prenatal Care Assistance Program (PCAP). Carthage Area Hospital has also worked diligently to enhance healthcare access to neighboring small and rural communities through opening and expanding primary care clinics. These clinics include: Harrisville Family Health Center, Evans Mills Family Health Center and Cape Vincent Family Health Center. A satellite Physical Therapy Clinic is also located in Philadelphia. A Dental Clinic and Veterans Administration Clinic are housed in the new Professional Building on Bridge Street, Carthage. The hospital not only serves as the only healthcare facility in Carthage, but as a major economic source for our community with an annual gross payroll of nearly eight million dollars.
