WorldLink provides assistance in information and communication technologies (ICTs) to underserved populations around the globe. Our mission is to provide a platform for telecommunications, IT, project management, business and education professionals to contribute time, expertise, and material resources to help meet ICT needs in underserved regions of the world. For as we meet ICT needs, we will also do much to help reduce poverty, improve healthcare and education, and stimulate economic growth. Part of the impetus for WorldLink comes from the success of Grameen Telecom, an organization in Bangladesh whose goal is to provide rural areas with universal access to telecommunications. Bangladesh has a teledensity of roughly three (3) lines per 1000 people. But Grameen has developed a self-sustaining business model that permits a Grameen Bank member/operator to purchase a phone under a lease-finance program and provide telephone services to people in the operator's village. The operator's income consists of the different between charges paid by customers and the airtime charges billed to the operator by Grameen Telecom. On the average, operators earn a net profit of $20-$40 per month, an important source of revenue in a country where per capita GDP is roughly $220 per year. Grameen Telecom's success in rural Bangladesh provides a model that can be replicated in other regions of the world. WorldLink aims to build upon the experience of Grameen Telecom and similar ITC initiatives, and establish telecom development projects in other regions of the world - starting in Morocco.
