The Nueva School was founded in 1967 by educational visionary Karen Stone McCown to provide a learning experience designed to meet the unique needs of the gifted student. Today, Nueva continues its progressive mission by providing an environment that engages multiple intelligences through differentiated curricula and fosters emotional and social development. To enter a Nueva classroom is to witness a dynamic and vibrant environment where students explore and experiment. They learn to communicate and cooperate in small and large groups, as well as to demonstrate passion through individual, self-directed projects. A myriad of activities require our gifted learners to investigate, solve problems, and make choices. Rather than utilizing traditional instructional approaches, Nueva students engage in simulations, media projects, narratives, performances, and discussions, among other authentic tasks. Learning also takes place beyond the classroom walls through environmental education on Nueva's 33-acre wooded campus and on curriculum-based field trips across the country and the world. Nueva students learn to make real-world connections, monitor their own learning, and become flexible thinkers who are adept risk-takers and lifelong learners.
