Troika Ranch offers a variety of residency activities designed for professional artists, high school arts majors, and undergraduate to graduate level students. Participants have included professional and aspiring choreographers, dancers, theater directors, film/video makers, composers, musicians and installation artists. Classes are easily adapted to the needs and availability of the participants. The Live-I Workshop is Troika Ranch's primary vehicle for sharing their extensive practical and aesthetic knowledge of technology use in live performance. The class begins with a hands-on introduction to the media tools used by Troika Ranch, including Isadora®, a user-friendly software tool that facilitates real-time manipulation of digital media. Isadora® creator Mark Coniglio leads this part of the program. Once students have a basic grasp of these tools, they will be led through a series of compositional experiments that address technology specific performance challenges. These include: how to effectively compose live performers with video imagery, how to integrate live video feeds and real-time video processing to create new contexts and narrative structures, creating "media instruments" where the performer or viewer controls the media, and digital scenography, among others. Students discover and produce their own studies for informal sharing and feedback.
