The Glass Contraption is a theater company. THIS IS OUR MISSION! The Glass Contraption trains artists, creates new works and develops communities through lovingly handcrafted clown theatre. There are no tiny clown cars, squirting flowers or giant shoes here -- our work departs from the grand spectacle of the big top circus, and lives in the world of the theater. The stories, images, songs and big ideas for our shows come from the abandon of the clown. Our theater magic is fashioned out of found materials, junk and strange objects that make us laugh like crazy or stop and wonder. The clown exposes our strangeness, our beauty, our humanity, ferocity, cruelty, and stupidity with a sense of humor and compassion. The company's goals are:Training Artists: To form and maintain a company of versatile, open and engaged theater artists highly-skilled in the world of clown and related styles;Creating New Works: To collaborate with and support innovators in the field of clown; To experiment with and push the bounds of clown in creating original works of theater; Developing Communities: To spread the gospel of clown, creating ongoing partnerships with schools, outreach centers and arts organizations; To collaborate with these communities to transform their stories, along with found objects and junk, into hilarious, moving works of theater.
