Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), the oldest operating performing arts center in the United States, presents innovative, experimental and contemporary theater, opera, dance, music and film. BAM's Next Wave Festival, one of the largest and most celebrated festivals of contemporary performing arts, is dedicated to the presentation of outstanding American and international performance with an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration. BAM dance, music, opera and theater events are presented in two permanent theaters, the BAM Opera House and the BAM Harvey Lichtenstein Theater (formerly the Majestic Theater). BAM Rose Cinemas, a state-of-the-art four-screen film complex, features first-run independent and foreign film and repertory programming. Live music and spoken word performances take place in BAMcaf,, which showcases up-and-coming experimental performers. Since July 1, 1999, Karen Brooks Hopkins is the institution's president; Joseph V. Melillo is executive producer.
