Info

Zephyr Press publishes literary titles that foster a deeper understanding of other cultures and languages, as well as our own. We focus on contemporary works in translation from Russia, Eastern Europe, and Asia, with occasional projects from other parts of the world. We also publish literature from the U.S., including the "Adventures in Poetry" series, and reprint books of literary and historical value that have long been out of print. We seek to be a bridge between cultures, and organize bilingual readings, translation workshops, and other educational and cross-cultural events to further that commitment. Recent Publishing Activities: Since 2000, we have published seven volumes of Russian in our "In the Grip of Strange Thoughts" series, five of Chinese literature, ten "Adventures in Poetry" books, and the first ever bilingual anthology of younger Polish poets, Carnivorous Boy, Carnivorous Bird: Poetry from Poland, which is now spawning its own series of younger Polish poets, beginning with Marzanna Kielar's Salt Monody. Our history of "firsts" also features Iraqi Poetry Today, published with Modern Poetry in Translation in 2003, the first anthology of Iraqi poetry to appear in English, with poems originally written in Arabic, Kurdish and Hebrew. We are now expanding our areas of interest. In 2003 we published our first bilingual Romanian book, and in 2006 Darkness Spoken: The Collected Poems of Ingeborg Bachmann, translated from the German by Peter Filkins. In 2006 also, we have brought out a collection of three Korean women poets, The Anxiety of Words. 2007 will bring a new, expanded edition of Letters from Mississippi including forty pages of poets from the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Schools, introduced by Langston Hughes. Zephyr titles are distributed by Consortium Book Sales & Distribution and by Small Press Distribution. Audience & Special Activities: We serve an international literary audience of thousands world-wide. We sponsor bilingual readings, educational workshops, and conference panels, and exhibit at several literary and academic book fairs each year. This year, we have begun programs in which our poets and translators give translation workshops to high school students in Massachusetts and New Mexico. Our updated edition of the civil rights book, Letters from Mississippi, has brought us a new audience, as have reunion readings in several states. In the past three years, we sold the rights to reprint poems and prose excerpts in some 30 publications, musical compositions, broadcast works, CD-ROMs and films. Our expanded web site, www.zephyrpress.org is linked to literary, Russian, Asian and other sites, and features audio files of poets and translators reading sample poems.
