Western Kentucky University is an NCAA Division I comprehensive athletics program with 20 sports programs. It has been a member of the Sun Belt Conference since 1982 and has participated in intercollegiate competition since 1910 when it fielded the school's first baseball team. WKU recently announced a move to the NCAA Division I-A (Football Bowl Subdivision) level, with the transition beginning in 2007. The Hilltoppers will be completely bowl eligible during the 2009 season. Hilltopper Athletics has won three of the last five Vic Bubas Cups, awarded annually to the top overall program in the Sun Belt Conference.
