Phoenix Media/Communications Group (www.thephoenix.com) is best known for its alternative weekly newspaper the Boston Phoenix and its corresponding Web site at thephoenix.com. The company publishes local versions of the paper in Providence, Rhode Island and Portland, Maine. It also operates alternative music station WFNX and has a sports and magazine division that publishes the official yearbooks for the Boston Celtics, the Boston Bruins, and the Boston Marathon, in addition to program guides for the Tweeter Center for the Performing Arts and the FleetBoston Pavilion summer music series. The Boston Phoenix was started in 1966 as a four-page arts-and-entertainment newsweekly.
