American Capital Ltd., formerly American Capital Strategies, Ltd., is an alternative asset management company. The Company is engaged in providing capital to middle market companies with sales between $10 million and $750 million. It primarily invests in senior debt, mezzanine debt and equity in the buyouts of private companies sponsored by the Company, the buyouts of private companies sponsored by other private equity firms and provides capital directly to early stage and mature private and small public companies. The Company invests up to $800 million in a single middle market transaction in North America. It also invests in commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS), commercial collateralized loan obligation (CLO) securities and collateralized debt obligation (CDO) securities, and invests in alternative asset funds managed by itself. In August 2008, the Company announced that it completed the sale of Contec Holdings, Ltd. to an affiliate of Bain Capital Partners, LLC.
