WellSolve operates as a hybrid site management organization (SMO). Working with contractual employees and strategic partners, we market, place, and oversee clinical trials for physicians with significant (greater than 25%) minority patient populations. We use the term "hybrid SMO" because we look to avoid the overhead costs of retaining property to house physicians and other staff in buildings leased or owned by our organization to run clinical studies (like many SMOs do). Instead, our intent is to create partnerships with physicians to run their studies effectively and efficiently with contractual staff or full-time employees, that we assist in identifying and training, to operate the clinical trials in physician practices. Our Site Management and Capacity Building Solutions include: Study Acquisition/Business Development, Contracting & Budgeting, Trial Management (patient recruitment, prep for site visits from pharmaceutical sponsors, etc.), Regulatory, Accounting, and Quality Assurance. As the physician learns more about the process (after 2 or 3 studies) we can assist them in identifying core staff (contractual or full-time) to maintain trials in his or her office and reduce overhead. The need for increasing numbers of clinical researchers/investigators has been prevalent for many years, but with advances in science, particularly pharmacogenomics and general biotechnology, the supply is not keeping up with the demand. The National Institutes of Health states that one of their most important challenges will be the career development of the next generation of scientists; and that to keep us with the rapid pace of scientific discovery, sustained investments are necessary and require long-term strategies where clinical research is concerned. Clearly, the time to get involved in building clinical trial capacity is NOW.
