What We Do: Currey & Company creates chandeliers, lamps, wall sconces, accent furniture and garden accessories. Our original designs incorporate an understanding of historic design with an abundance of imagination. A Currey & Company product speaks of the touch of human hands as well as of the design skills and craftsmanship that have created it. A Little Bit of History: In the 1980's Robert Currey sold his chain of contemporary furniture stores and began working on concepts and products for the garden as well as for the home. Inspired by his own garden-oriented retail stores and their need for interesting merchandise, he incorporated his already prospering product development and marketing business in 1988. This company, Garden Source, which focused on historic garden furnishings, became today's Currey & Company. The product line changed and evolved over the years including classic wrought iron and cast aluminum furniture, whimsical Americana, a plethora of birdhouses, rustic willow and hickory furniture, amusing gardening accessories, and, increasingly, lighting products. Lamps and chandeliers were first created from wrought iron; gradually the line was expanded to include other materials, but the products always incorporated an understanding of historic design and a lot of imagination. By the mid-1990's lighting had become a most important part of the business although garden accessories and occasional furniture remain in the collection. Currey & Company's table and floor lamps come in a variety of materials and styles. Inspirations for these designs often come from the past as familiar shapes and materials are translated into items appropriate for today's consumers. Wrought iron, brass, silver, wood and porcelain as well as a variety of ethnic materials are used to create these designs. For the most part chandeliers and wall sconces are still crafted of wrought iron in a variety of styles and sizes. Embellished with decorative elements of metal or crystal or unadorned, they are finished in a distinctive manner, reflecting the attention to workmanship and detail that is characteristic of Currey & Company products. The distinctiveness of the hand-finishing process that is used on these lighting products lends an air of depth and richness that cannot be achieved by less time-consuming finishing methods. Natural materials have always played a significant role in the creation of Currey & Company products and today this is more true than ever. Hand carved wood is used for chandeliers and lamps. Metals such as brass and copper are frequently seen in both chandeliers and lamps. Tables, chests, mirrors and chandeliers become delightful creations embossed lavishly with natural seashells. Garden furniture of concrete takes the form of traditional hand crafted "faux bois" styling as well as traditional English garden benches. All of Currey & Company's lighting products are designed and engineered to meet the rigid safety standards established by UNDERWRITER'S LABORATORY and bear the UL/CUI label (E141302 or E163523). This safety certification is valid in the United States and Canada. Currey & Company lighting products can also be manufactured to meet the standards of the European Union. Today Brownlee Currey plays a most active role in the management of Currey & Company as Chief Operating Officer. Robert Currey still plays a role as the guiding "spirit" of the company. The "Company" now includes a plant in the Philippines and a multi-cultural work force in Atlanta that creates, assembles, finishes, packs and ships product; a dedicated management team; and an office force that works hard to tend to details of accounting, order processing and customer service. A sales force that represents Currey & Company covers the United States.
