The Amherst County Sheriff's Office is a full service law enforcement agency responsible for covering approximately 470 square miles of the most majestic landscape in Virginia. To serve the county's diverse population of approximately 35,000, the Sheriff's Office employees a team of 80 employees who are assigned to Field Operations, Investigations, Crime Prevention, or Corrections. In addition there are several sub-components that an employee may be assigned to; Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Special Response Team (SRT), K-9 Team and the School Resource Officer (SRO) program. The western border of Amherst County is comprised of approximately 26 miles of the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway. It intersects the James River in the southwestern corner of the county to form the 55 mile southern and eastern borders. Contained within these borders are 70,000 acres of the George Washington National Forest and approximately 22 miles of the Appalachian Trail. The National Forest offers breathtaking views and swimming at both Panther Falls and Staton Creek Falls, hiking along the Appalachian Trail or up to the top of Mount Pleasant. All the beauty of Amherst County is just a short drive away.
