The mission of SAME is "to promote and facilitate engineering support for national security by developing and enhancing relationships and competencies among uniformed services, public and private sector engineers, and related professionals." Dr. Robert D. Wolff, P.E., F.SAME, became the Executive Director of SAME in September 2002. He is responsible for a staff of 20 and a budget of $3 million. SAME has more than 22,000 members and more than 1,400 Sustaining Member companies, public agencies and academic institutions. SAME, which is headquartered at Century House, a Civil War-era town house located in Alexandria, Va., is organized into 16 regions and has 123 Posts (Chapters), including 19 outside the United States. Dr. Wolff reports to a Board of Direction with 47 voting members and an Executive Committee of 12 voting members. Dr. Wolff served in a variety of increasingly demanding engineering and leadership positions in the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force and the private sector for 37 years prior to becoming the SAME Executive Director. He was an engineer officer in the U.S. Army for nine years after graduating from West Point, serving in Germany, Ft. Lewis, Washington, Vietnam, and Cambodia. He then served another 17 years in the Army Reserves, retiring in 1992 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Dr. Wolff obtained a doctorate in Civil Engineering from Stanford University while on active duty, after which he spent 20 years as a civilian with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Washington, D.C., Ft. Belvoir, Va., Dallas, Texas, and Baltimore, Md. In 1994, he was selected to be the senior civilian civil engineer for the U.S. Air Force as a member of the Senior Executive Service. Dr. Wolff held that position for three years, after which he was promoted to the Director of Logistics Plans for the Air Force. He retired from the Air Force in 1998. From 1998 to 2002, Dr. Wolff was a Vice President with CH2M Hill, a global engineering, environmental and construction company, where he worked in the areas of transportation and environmental programs and projects. Dr. Wolff has been a member of SAME since 1983. On the local level, he served on the Board of the Baltimore Post and was President of the Washington, D.C., Post, SAME's largest Post with nearly 1,400 members. On the national level, he served on the Board of Direction as the Chairman of the Technology Advancement Committee and later as the Chairman of the Education Committee. In 1992, he was awarded the SAME Goethals Medal for Engineering Achievement. He was designated a Fellow in 1995. Dr. Wolff is a Registered Professional Engineer in the District of Columbia. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the International Facility Management Association, the Army Engineer Association, the Association of the U.S. Army and the Air Force Association. Dr. Wolff and his wife, Phyllis, reside in Potomac, Md. They have two children and two grandchildren.
