WSRC has been the primary contractor at Savannah River since 1990 and is only the second operating contractor in the history of the 310-square-mile site. SRS, which includes portions of Aiken, Allendale, and Barnwell counties in South Carolina, was established in 1950 as a part of the U.S. government's nuclear materials production infrastructure. WSRC and its partner companies, Bechtel, BNFL, and BWXT, employ more than 11,000 people on the site. The renegotiated contract runs through September 2006 with the potential for an extension of up to two months.
