Info

Located in Abilene, Texas, Milsoft develops software for use in the electric utility industry. Our core products are WindMil (a CAD-like engineering analysis application) and DisSPatch (a real-time, multi-user outage management system). The extensive depth and scope of our software projects provide opportunities to exercise your talents in a variety of fields:User interface designGeographical information systemsComputer graphicsReal-time systemsComplex data structuresMulti-user systemsAlgorithm design and analysisMiddlewareNumerical methodsClient-server developmentObject-oriented designSoftware system integrationProgramming interface designWeb servicesDatabase programmingGPS and weather interfacesIn our summer internship program you will be working as part of a team of 3 to 4 interns who will be given a software project to be completed over the course of the summer. The project may involve adding major new enhancements to our existing product line or creating a new software tool from scratch and seeing it through to completion. Experienced developers at Milsoft will always be available as resources but the project will be primarily intern-directed. In our spring and fall internships you will be working primarily with the Milsoft development team rather than with other interns. Your responsibilities may be to maintain or finish projects started by the summer interns, assist in the development of our core products, or develop specialized tools for individual customers. What do I need to already know? Primarily we expect a high aptitude for problem-solving and the ability to quickly learn new languages and development environments. We will select interns who are 1) smart and 2) get things done. Neither Milsoft employees nor your fellow interns will be willing to teach you how to program, so it's important that you already have a solid understanding of programming concepts. Our core products at Milsoft are written in C++ and VB.Net, so you will be most useful to us if you have a working knowledge of these languages even if you are not proficient yet. Also, our intern application process involves some programming tests in which you will be asked to demonstrate your programming aptitude by actually writing some code in C++. Obviously, a working knowledge of C++ will be useful in these tests. What will my work schedule be like? Internships last only one summer or semester. Of course, you may always reapply for the next term if you choose to intern with us again. Summer internships will be 40 hours per week. Spring and fall internships will be 10 to 20 hours per week depending on your course load, and Milsoft will be flexible about the hours you work.
