Industry standards are specific requirements and expectations in terms of technical systems. Often a product or service must be up to industry standards which means passing a quality check and fitting certain criteria in terms of methodology, technical criteria or processes. The standards are published documents outlining the specifications and their implementation in products ranging from construction and transport, electronics and aerospace to green technology. This helps products to interact better with each other. One example is the IEEE 802 standard or 'Wi-Fi standard' which ensured communication between cash registers and is now evolved towards mobile devices such as computers and laptops. De facto standards are widely accepted without need for formal review within an industry, whereas consensus-based standards require the full standards development process. The IEEE Standards association is the oldest and most recognized industry standards developing organizations.
