Description of San Diego Men's Chorus

San Diego Men's Chorus was founded in May of 1985, by a small group of committed singers who felt the need to provide San Diego with a quality presentation of men's choral music. The Chorus was assisted by members of the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, who in August 1985 staged a fund-raising concert at the Casa del Prado Theater in Balboa Park. On September 9th, 1985, a total of 55 men were in attendance at the first weekly rehearsal. Membership in SDMC is open, by audition. The chorus currently rehearses each Monday evening at All Saint's Episcopal Church. Our musical repertoire includes classical, modern, multi-cultural, popular, Broadway, traditional American, and gay pride material. We have been active with the GALA (Gay and Lesbian Association of Chorus') since its inception. The Chorus year is divided into three performance cycles culminating in major concerts in the spring and Winter Holidays. The third performance trimester culminates in a 2 night joint concert with other musical organizations during LGBT Pride Week in San Diego. Significant Events in the later half of the 1990s include singing at the White House during the Holiday Season (the first gay identified Chorus to do so), singing and dancing at the Superbowl, singing at San Diego Padres games, as well as performances in Tucson, Arizona; Palm Springs, California; and for Knott's Berry Farm, Stepping Stone, Gala, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal Park, and both Insights ‘96 and ‘97. San Diego Men's Chorus has made donations of concerts, concert tickets, and money to organizations such as San Diego AIDS Foundation, Auntie Helen's Fluff-n-Fold, Mama's Kitchen, Special Delivery, Human Rights National Committee, Creative Response, San Diego American Indian Health Center, San Diego Hospice, Being Alive - San Diego, Fraternity House, and Positively Speaking. The annual Pride benefit concert (performed along with other SD-area gay & lesbian musical organizations) has become an anticipated tradition. In the summer of 2004, the Chorus made its international debut by performing at the GALA Choruses international choral festival in Montreal in front of thousands of spectators from around the world. The San Diego Men's Chorus celebrated its 20th anniversary during the 2005-2006 season. The season began with the annual holiday show in the brand new home of SDMC and Lyric Opera San Diego, the Birch North Park Theatre (also home to the Chorus' new offices). The Chorus helped pay for the renovation of the theatre's original 1930s chandeliers. The season continued with several exciting events, including a gala anniversary concert in April 2006.
