Description of Lower East Side Tenement Museum

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum was founded in 1988 to "promote tolerance and historical perspective through the presentation and interpretation of the variety of immigrant and migrant experiences on Manhattan's Lower East Side." The heart of the Tenement Museum is its landmark tenement building, 97 Orchard Street, home to 7,000 people, immigrants from over 20 nations, from 1863 to 1935. In addition to offering living history programs, neighborhood walking tours, and public and group tours of its tenement, the Museum is committed to using history to foster dialogue on contemporary immigration-related issues. The Museum is seeking part-time facilitators for the "Kitchen Conversations" public dialogue program, a one-hour, facilitated discussion available to visitors after select tours. Kitchen Conversations is a rare and exciting opportunity for Museum visitors to engage in a dialogue with visitors from around the world on pressing immigration-related topics raised by the tours of 97 Orchard Street.
