Description of The Bond Market Association
The Bond Market Association® is the trade association representing the largest securities markets in the world, the estimated $48 trillion debt markets. As the industry's voice, the Association speaks for the global bond industry, advocating its positions and representing its interests in New York; Washington, D.C.; London; Frankfurt; Brussels and Tokyo; and with issuer and investor groups worldwide. The Association represents a diverse mix of securities firms and banks, whether they are large, multi-product firms or companies with special market niches. Going by the numbers, more than 30% of the Association's members specialize in a particular bond market. Seventy-percent of the member firms are headquartered outside of New York City, while approximately 20% are substantially owned by institutions located outside the U.S. An additional 10% are predominantly American-owned multinationals. The Association's membership collectively accounts for approximately 95% of the U.S. municipal bond underwriting and trading activity. The membership also includes all primary dealers in U.S. government securities, as recognized by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and all major dealers in U.S. agency securities, mortgage- and asset-backed securities and corporate bonds, as well as money market and funding instruments. Membership is open to any bona fide debt securities dealer, as long as the firm supports the Association's objectives. These include endorsement of the goal of promoting fairness and efficiency through open access to the bond markets throughout the world, with the participation of multinational financial institutions unrestricted by narrow questions of nationality. In order to benefit from a broad range of debt market views, the Association also offers associate memberships to firms whose business interests are closely tied to the debt securities markets. In recent years, the Association has sponsored specialized industry forums, such as the European Securitisation Forum, the American Securitization Forum and the Asset Managers Forum, whose membership further broadens the Association's activities and diverse representation of the fixed-income market. The Bond Market Association's success in fostering improvement in the legislative, regulatory, educational and market practice arenas for all participants in the bond markets is the result of a productive partnership between the Association's membership and the staff of approximately 118 people located in offices in New York, Washington and London.
