Description of USC Fisher Gallery

USC Fisher Gallery is the accredited art museum of the University of Southern California. It was founded in 1939 by Elizabeth Holmes Fisher and has permanent collections including groups of 19th century American landscapes; 16th and 17th century Northern European paintings; 18th century British portraiture; and 19th century French Barbizon paintings, as well as 20th century works on paper, paintings and sculpture. USC Fisher Gallery was the first museum established in Los Angeles devoted exclusively to the exhibition and collection of fine art. The exhibition schedule includes exhibitions of the permanent collection in the Walter and Hertha Klinger Gallery, Quinn Wing and changing exhibitions (of about 8 to 12 weeks duration) in the main galleries. Between the two facilities is a reading room where catalogs and other relevant materials are placed to encourage reflection in our audiences. Small focus exhibitions or orientation materials are also placed in the Goodstein Reading Room. Klinger Gallery, Quinn Wing, the museum's permanent collection exhibition space, is open year round during the academic year and by appointment during the summer months. USC Fisher Gallery offers exhibitions ranging from antiquities to Old Master artists through contemporary works by artists who are local, national and international. Since USC Fisher Gallery is a University museum it has extraordinary access to a wide range of intellectual and human resources. USC Fisher Gallery's other extraordinary resource is its location in Los Angeles and the middle of a museum complex of extraordinary vitality. We have collaborated with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California African American Museum. Since its opening in 1939, USC Fisher Gallery has grown significantly in stature and prominence as the museum of USC. In addition to showing the permanent collection, the Museum presents traveling exhibitions and organizes its own successful exhibitions, offering the campus and community, as well as the greater Los Angeles area, a wide variety of changing exhibitions. Many of the exhibitions held in USC Fisher Gallery have been made possible by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the California Arts Council. Most exhibitions are accompanied by a scholarly catalogue.
