Description of Kalihi YMCA
The Kalihi YMCA has been serving the community since 1946. Kalihi Y is part of the YMCA of Honolulu, which has been serving Hawai'i since 1869. The YMCA has nine facilities on Oahu. In 1946, the Kalihi YMCA was established as a Branch of the YMCA of Honolulu. For more than fifty years, the Kalihi YMCA has been known as a provider of high quality programs for children and teens. Over the past few years this has included services for children like Summer Fun and A+ programs. In the trend toward year around schooling, the Kalihi YMCA has worked in collaboration with elementary schools to provide stimulating academic and recreational programs during those periods when school is not in session. In 1962, the Board of Managers of the Kalihi Y founded the first outreach program to work with gang members in Honolulu. Over time, the Kalihi Y has added adolescent substance abuse programs funded by the Family Court, the Office of Youth Services and the Department of Health. The Kalihi Y has been providing substance abuse services for O'ahu teens for more than twenty -five years. The mission of the Kalihi YMCA is to assist children and teenagers to develop a healthy body, mind and spirit.
