Info

Solomon Schechter School of Westchester (SSSW) is a school grounded in tradition that is innovative in its approach to teaching and learning. Our educational program integrates the timeless values of Jewish tradition and culture with the best of what Western civilization has to offer. Schechter is a vibrant place; conversations from classrooms spill out into the hallways, and a myriad of clubs and more than 30 elective choices give students the opportunity to expand their horizons and develop their leadership skills. As a Conservative, egalitarian community, our students and teachers daven and learn together each day at shaharit, mincha, rosh hodesh hagigot, holiday celebrations, and of course participate in extensive studies in Talmud, Tanakh, and Hebrew Langauge. As an academic institution, we know that learning takes place both in and out of the classroom. The High School curriculum requires students to grapple with textsâ€"both Jewish and secularâ€"and encourages them to find meaning, relevance, and pleasure in their studies. Teachers do not merely allow their students to answer a question, but expect them to explore various approaches to solving problems. Each year, students engage with their teachers in the classroom and participate in school-wide and grade-level shabbatonim, class trips, and special programs. Our senior year is distinguished by two months abroad, traveling for one week through Poland followed by living in Israel for seven weeks. This incredible educational experience helps our students culminate their learning by bearing witness to our history and celebrating the richness of Jewish life and culture. The energy and vitality of a Schechter education is clear to all who have had the pleasure of seeing it in action. As a community of Jewish learners, Schechter is second to none. Our students and faculty care for one another and for the welfare of the community, and we work together to sharpen each other's minds and intellects. Schechter graduates have a rich understanding of who they are as Jews, as Americans, and what their role can be in the greater world. They enter the college arena well equipped to engage in serious study, and are able to contribute to the diversity on campus as secure, committed, knowledgeable Jews. Our graduates have assumed leadership positions on the college campus, and are activists for Israel and for social justice. We are proud of the community we have created in the High School and of the level of learning that takes place here. When all is said and done, after all of the books are read, the problems solved, the experiences had, I am proud to say that our students leave us with a true sense of self confidence, passion, a love for Jewish living and learning, and the skills to enjoy great success in their livesâ€"and perhaps most important, as mensches who will be so integral to the future of the Jewish and world community.
