Description of Fassbender Gallery

Ingrid Fassbender established the Fassbender Gallery in 1993 to promote contemporary Chicago artists to an international audience and at the same time to bring innovative European artists to Chicago. The gallery's primary focus is on recent innovations in painting, sculpture, photography and installation. In addition, the gallery also carries an extensive inventory of works on paper ranging from intimate drawings to works by well known American and European printmakers. Initially occupying a 3,000 square-foot space in a loft building located in Chicago's River West neighborhood, Fassbender Gallery soon expanded, adding a 4,000 square-foot facility at 309 West Superior. The Superior Street location, in the heart of Chicago's River North Gallery District, added two large exhibition spaces, The Main Gallery and The Project Room, to the Fassbender venue. In March of 2000, Fassbender Gallery moved to 835 West Washington Street, 2 blocks from the Randolph Street Corridor, in what is fast becoming Chicago's most exciting gallery district for contemporary art. The original loft space, now referred to as The Annex, has been retained for the presentation of special events, exhibitions, installations, and performances. The Annex also serves as a live/work space for visiting European artists. This work space was recently utilized by Berlin artist, Renate Herter, for the development of her minimal installation Kopfräume/Headrooms. In addition to exhibiting approximately 18 solo shows per year, Fassbender Gallery routinely presents group exhibitions dealing with current issues in contemporary art, often with political and international relevance. Political Visions showcased 4 artists who deal with issues of identity, often from a viewpoint outside the political mainstream. Group Talleria presented several contemporary artists from Mexico City, and Art Beyond Conflict was the largest exhibition of Irish contemporary art in Chicago.
